This will remove dirt/sediment particles prior to them entering your more expensive carbon filter. If the dirt and Sediment are not filtered out before contact with the carbon filter, they can cause premature blocking of the carbon filter. A 5 micron Sediment Filter will still allowing a good flow through the filter. So using the sediment filter prior to the carbon filter will prolong the working life of your more expensive carbon filter.

Minerals in the water will build up on the quartz sleeve and on the vessel. This coating must be cleaned off periodically because it reduces the amount of UV light reaching the water, therefore reducing disinfection performance.Depending on the water quality, it is advised to clean the unit at least every time the lamp is changed.

If the unit has been turned off, it is recommended to disinfect the unit and the water lines.

Required: Pre-treatment must include at least a 5 micron sediment filter installed prior to the unit in order to ensure that particles capable of shielding pathogens are removed from the water prior to entering the system. The vessel is rated to 100Kpa. The unit must be installed with an Australian Standards Approved Pressure Limiting Valve.

A shut off valve must be installed prior to the unit in order to turn the water off for servicing and to ensure the flow is restricted to the parameters of the unit.Ensure adequate clearance at the lamp connection end of the unit in order to safely remove the lamp from the chamber for servicing and lamp replacement. Space required is at least the length of the UV chamber.

Water is essential for our existence; however water can often carry dangerous or harmful contaminants. Generally, the goal of water sanitation is to produce water fit for human consumption. The treatment often involves removing of undesirable chemical and biological contaminants as well as reducing the concentration of particulate matter from raw water.

Rainwater makes sense

Australia is the driest continent in the world, so it’s essential that we preserve our natural fresh water reserves. Over 90% of Australians get their domestic water supply from mains or town water but there are many areas where households collect rainwater in domestic tanks for all their water needs or at least to augment their supply.

As water restrictions are now an everyday part of our life, it makes sense to fully utilise rainwater. After all mankind has collected rainfall from roof run-off for over 3000 years.

It’s the right thing to do environmentally as well, since you will be reducing the flow of stormwater into street gutters which can pollute our rivers and waterways.

Is it really safe?

The general public perception is that unfiltered rainwater is safe to drink. However we must remember that water from household tanks is not as well treated or managed as major urban water supplies. Certainly it is generally the case that the microbial quality of the domestic rainwater is not as reliable as mains water, especially after rain, as most roof catchments and rainwater tanks are poorly maintained.

In addition, in our cities, industrial and heavy traffic emissions affect the chemical quality of rainwater. And in our country areas, the use of pesticides can affect the quality of rainwater.

Microbial hazards

While the chemical and physical quality of rainwater is fairly easy to maintain, microbial quality isn’t. Unfiltered rainwater can contain a smorgasbord of
micro-organisms that come from one or more sources. While most can be harmless, the real safety of water depends on the presence of enteric pathogens.

Enteric pathogens include bacteria, protozoa and viruses. They get into the water via droppings deposited by birds, mice, rats, possums etc on the roof or by dead animals or insects that fall into gutters or the tank itself.

With underground tanks, dangers are also present as ground run-off with human or animal excreta can contaminate rainwater – like seepage from a septic tank.

Chemical hazards

Chemical hazards include traffic and industrial emissions like lead in towns and cities and pesticide over-spraying in country areas. Other sources come from the catchment area from the materials used to make roofs, gutters, pipes, wood heater flues, even the tanks themselves. Smoke, ash and debris from bushfires can also be washed into your tank from the roof.

Tastes and smells

Good rainwater is taste and odour free. But there are many conditions that can cause yucky tastes and smells. Rotting vegetation, algae, even soil that’s accumulated in your gutters can release tastes and smells into your rainwater.

Safeguards you can take

Here are some preventative measures you can take to reduce contamination of your rainwater.

Keep the catchment area (roofs, gutters etc) free from overhanging trees or shrubs which allow animals to get onto your roof.

Screen the tank inlets and overflows so animals and birds can’t get into your tank.

Ensure your tank is sealed so no other water (like ground run off) can enter.

Treat the tank with a small amount of medicinal paraffin or kerosene to prevent mosquitoes breeding.

If your roof has large amounts of lead flashing, paint it.

Don’t collect rainwater from roofs coated with bitumen-based materials or painted with high lead paint (pre 1970s paint). If freshly painting, check that paint is suitable with the paint retailer.

Check your tank every year and if the bottom is completely covered with sludge then either drain or pump the sediment out and then clean HydraSil Water Purification

Water filtration is the process of removing impurities from raw water through one or a series of treatment systems. Filtration is one process and aeration is another important water purification process.

What is Water Aeration and Why is it Important?

Aeration is more than the supply of oxygen and mixing Aeration is cornerstone of biological wastewater treatment and controls the treatment performance and operational economics of the entire wastewater treatment of the entire wastewater treatment facility. Analysis of wastewater treatment plant cost repeatedly shows that aeration accounts for 50% to 80% of overall plant-operation budget. Without the right aeration technology and properly designed aeration system, treatment performance and plant operating cost adjectives cannot be attained.

HydraSil Happy Fish, HF 500 (5%) is a water treatment product based on hydrogen peroxide stabilised with trace complex silver salts. The resulting synergistic effect of these two components is such that the disinfectant efficacy is l2 to l5 times greater than that of hydrogen peroxide alone.

Because of this efficacy HF 500 has gained approvals from regulatory bodies like the National Medical Health and Research Council of Australia for the disinfecting of potable water, which hydrogen peroxide on it’s own would never have gained.

HF 500 eliminates chlorine from the water almost immediately.

HF 500 is an ideal sanitiser for the control of bacteria, virus and fungi in water because it not only helps to eliminate harmful pathogens in the water, but it increases the level of oxygen in water which is particularly important in high density fish farming.

Because of the increased levels of oxygen a further benefit of the application of HF 500 is the oxidation and elimination of ammonia which is often a problem in closed fish farming systems.

Unlike other water sanitation products, HF 500 is environmentally friendly and at the recommended dosage levels is non toxic and completely safe for marine life, with the added effect of accelerated growth and development.

HF 500 is effective in both fresh water and salt water fish farming with a Finnish Atlantic Salmon farm using it to combat and control gill and fin rot in their Salmon with great success

HF 500 IN PROCESSING PLANTS FISH PROCESSING & TRANSPORT

Another application where HF 500 is most effective is in the processing of harvested fish. The rapid onset of the putrefaction process in fish meat, caused by the natural microbes and bacteria living on the fishes skin, can spoil the product before it reaches the end user. This is especially a problem during the Summer months.
To eliminate these bacteria it is recommended to immerse the processed fish in a bath containing 800ppm of HF 500. This will ensure that the fish meat will stay fresh for a longer period.

HF 500 can also be used to remove putrid odours from fish meat.

EQUIPMENT & PROCESSING FACILITIES

Regular use of HF 500 in the wash down and disinfecting of equipment & facilities will ensure that the swap count will remain below 10 cfu, which exceeds Australian Standards for export food processing plants.

For this application HF 500 is diluted 1 to 100 (1%) with tap water and the equipment floors etc. can either be rinsed with water, but this is not necessary as the residual of HF 500 is tasteless, odourless and non toxic.

SUMMARY OF HF 500 BENEFITS

Chlorine free. Actually removes chlorine from water

No chemical smell or taste

Oxygenates the water

Safe for marine life

Effectively controls bacteria, virus and fungi

Non toxic

Environmentally safe

Effective in a wide range of pH

Effective in temperatures 0’C to 99’C

Not affected by UV rays (ideal residual treatment for UV disinfecting systems)

Non corrosive

Effective in turbid or running water

Does not have any significant affect on water pH levels

Assists in the growth and development of fish, prawn and shellfish

Destroys odour on processed fish

DOSAGE INFORMATION

The exact dosage rates vary with the degree of contamination in the water and the density of the fish population - experimentation within the following guidelines will allow the user to determine the most effective and economic dosage level. It is important to note that the effectiveness of the product can be reduced if other chemicals are present in the water.

FISH FARMING INITIAL DOSAGE

If the water is heavily silted or muddy it may need to be drained and refilled before adding HF 500at 50 ppm. After which a maintenance dosage level of between 8 to 12 ppm should be maintained.

If the water is unable to be drained it is recommended that a shock dose of 200 ppm should be instituted without the fish being present. The system can then be restocked with medium growth fish once the HF 500 level is below 50 ppm.

If fingerlings (juvenile fish) are to be stocked the level of HF 500 must be below 20 ppm because oxygen shock (the bends) can result in the fingerlings if the level of HF 500 is above 20 ppm.

PROCESSING DOSAGES

To bath the processed fish add 800ml of HF 500 directly into 1,000L of water, immerse fish for a period of 5 mins. Ensure residual levels of HF 600 do not fall below 600 ppm if the same water is used for several batches.

To remove odour spray the fish meat with a 0.1% solution of HF 500 (100 ml HF 500 to 1,000 L water.

No rinsing is required for both of the above listed applications, as the residual of HF 500 in the main is water & oxygen and is non toxic, tasteless and odourless.

Non electric Dosage Pumps as well as Redox residual measuring and dosing equipment specifically designed for HF 500 are available, as well as simple to use litmus paper test strips to determine the exact dosage in the water at any time.
